THE ROLE

Royal Birmingham Conservatoire seeks to appoint an outstanding individual to lead its flourishing Strings Department, which comprises bowed strings, guitar and harp.

The successful applicant will have a national or international reputation as a performer and teacher. They will be able to articulate a strong vision for the future of the department, including the development of a recruitment strategy designed to maintain a strong pipeline of applicants from the UK and overseas, as well as the maintenance of provision which is highly relevant to the needs and aspirations of developing young artists. A commitment to promoting and supporting orchestral work, as part of a broad menu of performance activity also including chamber music and historical performance, is essential. The new postholder will have a detailed, up-to-date understanding of the demands of today’s employment landscape, and will ideally have an extensive network of industry contacts with which the department can engage. They will possess the necessary creative flair to manage programmes of study, and also to collaborate with internal colleagues and external partners in the provision of exciting, high quality performance projects. Some prior experience of managing a team is desirable.
