Overview

Stetson University seeks an outstanding musician and educator for a full-time, nine-month
tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Music in Cello beginning in August 2025.

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will bring a proven record of performance excellence and
effective teaching experience to Stetson’s undergraduate-only cello studio. A broad
knowledge of solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire is necessary as is a terminal degree
(DMA or PhD) in music, though those with commensurate professional experience and a
master’s degree, as well as ABD doctoral candidates, will be considered. Teaching
expertise and experience in additional core music areas is desirable. The successful
candidate will demonstrate their potential to be an effective administrator of string and
chamber programs, and to represent Stetson University as a performer on the national
stage.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties include teaching applied cello, mentoring undergraduate music students
inside and outside of the studio, recruiting a diverse body of talented cellists, and
coordinating chamber music through the School of Music. Teaching in additional core
music areas may be required, depending on the needs of the school and as aligned with
the candidate’s expertise, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to
contribute a student-centered immersive experience (equivalent to one course) as a part of
the University’s experiential, contemporary, and integrative learning initiative – Hatter
Ready. The candidate must maintain an active national professional profile, as well as
collaborate effectively with Stetson string-area faculty members and the orchestra
director. School and university service on committees is expected of all tenured and
tenure-track faculty, as is contributing to advancing the mission of the school and
promoting national prominence for Stetson University.

THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Stetson’s School of Music (http://www.stetson.edu/music) is an undergraduate-only
program known for its excellence, depth, and long-standing reputation for the quality of its
education. The school offers BM, BME, and BA degrees, with majors in performance, music
education, music theory, composition, and outside-field areas. A faculty of 46 serves
approximately 225 music majors and minors. The school has its own dean and holds full
membership in the National Association of Schools of Music. Recent graduates of the
School of Music are found on the stages of the world’s great opera houses (including the
Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and Covent Garden), hold leadership positions in major
symphony orchestras, serve as faculty members of the most prestigious colleges and
universities throughout the nation, and matriculate in distinguished graduate programs in
the United States and Europe. The School of Music is proud of the consistent placement of
its BME graduates as teachers in K-12 school music education programs in Florida and
throughout the nation.

THE UNIVERSITY

Collectively, Stetson’s faculty works with approximately 3,700 students in undergraduate,
graduate, and professional programs. The University’s historic main campus, located in

THE COMMUNITY
DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 38,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona
Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as
recreational activities.

SALARY
Salary is competitive.
