Oulu Symphony Orchestra: Principal Cello

Oulu Symphony Orchestra is composed of 61 musicians and is the northernmost symphony orchestra in Finland. The Oulu Symphony Orchestra performs traditional symphony concerts, as well as a wide range of musical genres. Madetoja hall at the Oulu Music Center has 816 seats.

The task is to act as a principal cello in the symphony orchestra. The cello principal is expected to maintain his/her playing skills as a soloist and carry out all other tasks within the area of responsibility.

The position requires excellent playing skills and good social interaction skills.

The audition will be held on Monday the 16th of August 2021 starting at 10 am (Finnish time) at the Madetoja Hall, Leevi Madetojan katu 1-3, Oulu, Finland.

Audition repertoire:

– mandatory repertoire
J. Haydn: Cello Concerto in D Major, Op. 101, (1st movement with cadenza)
J. Brahms: The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B♭ Major, Op. 83, (slow movement cello solos)

– one of the following romantic concertos of applicants choice:
A. Dvořák: Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104, B. 191, (1st movement)
R. Schumann: Cello Concerto in A minor, Op. 129 (1st movement)
E. Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 (1st and 2nd movement)
P. Tchaikovsky: Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 33

– orchestral music excerpts sent after the application period.

Orchestral music repertoire will be sent as PDF to persons invited to audition after the closing date for submitting applications. The file includes first round’s mandatory J. Brahms: The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B♭ Major, Op. 83, slow movement cello solos.

If a member of the orchestra will be chosen to the vacancy of principal cello, his/her vacancy can be filled by this audition.
