Rhythmic Freedom

FacebookTwitterRedditLinkedInPinterestWhatsApp

Janos Starker discusses the concept of agogic (rhythmic freedom) in music, which refers to the subtle lengthening of certain notes ro bring out their harmonic or melodic importance. Agogic allows for expressive freedom within a musical bar, avoiding distortions that might compromise the integrity of the tempo. He also contrasts agogic with rubato. Starker underscores that even great imagination or charisma cannot excuse a lack of musical proportion and that while many audience members might not fully grasp these nuances, performers should aim to engage those few who truly understand and appreciate the depth of their interpretation.
